  • Cunard Line announced that Queen Mary 2 will undergo a 25-day drydock refurbishment next summer at the Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany. This major refurbishment will further refine and refresh guest interior spaces and launch new innovations designed to exceed guest expectations. Three of the key developments are the addition of 15 Single Staterooms, 30 additional Britannia Club Balcony Staterooms, and 10 additional kennels for four-legged travelers.

    Celebrity Captain Kate

  • For the first time in the cruise industry, and in Celebrity Cruises’ history, an American female will take the helm of a mega-ton cruise ship. Kate McCue, a 37-year-old San Francisco native, will take command of Celebrity Summit in August 2015. McCue was given the position of Captain based on her 15 years of successful experience and leadership in the maritime industry.

  • American Cruise Lines recently announced the name of its brand-new Mississippi paddlewheeler, America, which is currently under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland. America will be the line’s eighth ship and is scheduled to sail the Mississippi River in early 2016. The line says it will introduce features never before seen on a riverboat.

  • Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has selected Mercy Ships as its Charity of Choice. Through this partnership, CLIA will work with Mercy Ships to further endorse their initiatives to deliver healthcare to developing nations and make CLIA global members aware of the international nonprofit’s mission and efforts. Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to deliver free, world-class healthcare services, capacity building, and sustainable development to those without access in the developing world.
