FORT LAUDERDALE, FL.,
2006 – Porthole Cruise Magazine, celebrating its 10Th anniversary in 2006 as the leading consumer publication focusing on cruise and destination travel, is forging full steam ahead in preparation for its Ninth Annual Porthole Golf Classic. The tournament will be played on Monday, March 13, 2006, at the Westview Country Club in Miami.
Proceeds raised from the event will benefit The Jackson Memorial Foundation, specifically its Taylor Breast Health Center; the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Porthole Cruise Magazine’s Children’s Fund, distributed through United Way of Miami-Dade.
"We realize the importance of helping those in need," said Bill Panoff, publisher and editor-in-chief. Proceeds raised from the tournament will assist in the research to find a cure for breast and lung cancer, as well as with the ongoing struggle to help underprivileged children.”
The first Golf Classic was held in 1998, in memory of Linie Hilderink, sister of Irene Panoff, PPI’s chief operations officer. Hilderink lost her battle with breast cancer in 1996. In 2001, the lung cancer research department of the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center was added as a beneficiary, following the loss of Porthole contributing writer Sherry Sbarsky, who also succumbed to the disease.
To the date, the classic has raised approximately $700,000, thus placing Porthole Cruise Magazine at a Grand Founder level with the University of Miami and on Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Silver Seraphim level, one that includes notable donors such as the Miami Dolphins, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, the Miami Heat, Office Depot, and singer Julio Iglesias.
“Having Porthole Cruise Magazine recognized as a Silver Seraphim donor is truly an honor,” said Irene Panoff. “Our goal is to continue to exceed all expectations and surpass the $130,000 target that we have set for the 2006 tournament. As Sir Winston Churchill once said, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make our life by what we give.’ ”
Westview’s 6,786-yard golf course is richly landscaped and provides an excellent challenge for both novice and expert players. Built in 1924, the clubhouse was a gambling casino in the 1930s and used as a bunkhouse during World War II.
